Digital Product Passport

From cotton field to finished garment — every step open and provable

DPP is a digital passport system for cotton-textile products. Scan the QR code on the item: the growing region, every production stage and the laboratory results appear in a signed passport.

The code is printed under the QR. You can also scan the QR with your phone camera.

About the project

DPP is a pilot project built for a cotton-textile cluster. Its goal is to document the whole journey from cotton grown in the field to the finished item in the shop, and to give that information to the buyer in an open, verifiable form.

What?

Every production event inside the cluster is recorded in the same way and written to a tamper-evident hash chain.

  • Cotton intake, ginning, blending, spinning, knitting, dyeing, cutting and sewing
  • Mass of every lot, with its input and output lots
  • Laboratory analyses and quality inspector decisions
  • An Ed25519-signed passport and QR label for each finished item

Why?

Claims about product origin should be proven with evidence, not words.

  • Buyers can check for themselves where an item came from
  • Producers can demonstrate quality and traceability with evidence
  • Reliable origin data for export partners
  • Preparation for the EU Digital Product Passport (ESPR) requirements

For whom?

The system gives each party the information it needs.

  • Buyers: item history and quality results via the QR code
  • Export partners: lot origin and laboratory reports
  • Certification and inspection bodies: records that can be checked for tampering
  • Cluster enterprises: one shared record of stages and stock

What's in the passport

OriginFarm, region, cotton variety, harvest and the share of each source
ProductFibre composition, fabric type, yarn, colour, sizes and lot data
Production stagesDate of each stage and the links between lots
Quality controlLaboratory results, the standard in force and the inspector decision
Resource useWater and energy used per item or per kg of fabric
AuthenticitySignature check and consistency with the chain records

What the trust is based on

Hash chain

Every record contains the hash of the previous one. An old record cannot be changed or deleted unnoticed: the whole chain would fail verification.

Digital signature

Passports are signed with the cluster Ed25519 key. The public key is open, so anyone can verify a signature independently.

Mass balance

At each stage the output plus waste must equal the input material, and the waste share is checked against the norm.

Original laboratory report

The SHA-256 hash of the laboratory file is written to the chain. If the file is replaced, the passport shows it immediately.

How it works

Raw cottonIntake from the farm: region, variety, mass
FibreGinning: lint and seed are separated
YarnBlending and spinning
Fabric & itemKnitting, dyeing, cutting and sewing
PassportSigned passport and QR label

Mass balance and laboratory analyses are checked at each stage. The result goes into the passport; the original laboratory report opens via a link.

The state of the chain up to record #48 has been recorded outside the system. 0 new records have been added since.

An anchor is the moment the hash of the latest chain record is sent outside the system (e.g. to management e-mail or a public channel). If any earlier record were changed, it would no longer match this hash.
